The Apple brand prizes were donated by our awesome sponsor, Fidelity Investments. Our MC was the talented local teen author Allyson Richards. Special thanks to Michelle Barth, the Mayor's Chief of Staff, for being one of our judges this year!

The Teen Summer Drawing Contest Show went up last Wednesday on Art Walk night and will remain up for the month. As usual, we received lots of really good entries including some illustrations and drawings with pen and paint. (The contest accepted only graphite and color pencils. We may change the rules for the next contest to include pen and paint for illustrations as long as it is not the primary medium used.) Next month, the winner Kindra M. will get a solo show.

JYPS 2011 Winner - Elijah Israel

This year's Jax Youth Poetry Slam competition that was held on July 20th was everything we hoped it would be and more! To start, founder Toyna Smart organized another warm and engaging experience for all in attendance, and host Taryn Wharwood kept the energy flowing with humor and a sampling of her own speak. In addition, the show was punctuated by a few inspiring open mic performances including one singing sensation. Of course, the highlight of the show centered around 9 young poet performers who where judged by a panel of 5 on a scale of 1-10 with the highest and lowest scores being dropped. In the end, 3 poets ranked first, second, and third place in this competition. The winners will receive personal recording sessions and CD's!!

Here are some pics of the renovation of our big couch. Take a look!

Day 1: Start of removal of paneling

They had fun removing the panels from the back!
Day 2: Removal of the old drywall from the back, and beginning of installation of the drywall trim on the front.

Day 3: Beginning of installing wood panels on the back, and finish drywall trim on the front.

Somehow, Day's 4,5,& 6 got deleted off my camera! Sorry! Those days, they installed the drywall squares to the back of the couch. Then on Day 6, they sanded down the pieces, so they were even. then the painter came by and laid the primer paint down.

Day 7- Painting time!

And the finished product!!

I think they did a good job, don't you think?

Winter 2011 Teen Drawing Contest RESULTS

Thank you to all of you who participated in the Winter 2011 Teen Drawing Contest! All in all, we received 22 fine entries. As promised, the show went up on Art Walk night, Wednesday, February 2, 2011 when the winners were anounced. Though the competition was tight, the selections were made from a panel of judges based on three factors including skill, originality, and "Wow" factor. All winners will get a free gift book and the 1st place winner will get a solo show next month in March. (Remember, if you missed this contest, there will be more to come.) Lastly, the show will stay up all month, so if you haven't seen it, do drop in;)

It's good to have Friends!

We all should have friends like these - friends of the Jacksonville Public Library system.

They keep outdoing themselves.

Friends of Jacksonville Public Library announced its record gift - $250,000 - to the Jacksonville Public Library. The money will be used to supplement the library budget.

"Why did we have such a good year? Because we have lots of great volunteers and lots of great customers," said Harry Reagan, Friends president, said in a news release.

The gift comes from two Great Jacksonville Book Sales, as well as year-round book sales at the BOOKtique (in the Main Library) and the Saturday Morning Bookstore (at University Park Library), as well as some online book sales.

Friends of the Library was established in 1954. This generation of the friends really is the greatest.

Hello Teen Folk,

I'd like to introduce you to our newest staff member Kaity Barrand...

1.Your name?
Well, it's Catherine but I go by Kaity. =)
2. Where you are from?
I'm originally from Miami, but spent my formative years between there, Tallahassee, Orlando, and Gainesville. Currently I live in Jacksonville, FL.
3. Name two hobbies?
My forever hobby is reading. My parents have more photos of me reading in blanket forts and laundry baskets than any other activity as a toddler. =) My second hobby is definitely hiking! My fiance and I plan on tackling the Appalachian Trail, hopefully next summer!
4. Your favorite vacation spot?
My absolute favorite vacation spot is the Smoky Mountains, specifically the Dillsboro-Bryson City area. My parents eloped in Bryson City during the Miami riots in 1980 (they were married at the courthouse by the sheriff and the Cherokee Indian chief, who were playing checkers on the front porch. True story!) and every summer while I was growing up we would camp there for a few weeks. I've since traveled to Europe and still, nowhere feels as special and rejuvenating as those towns and mountains.
5. The last book you have read?
The last books I read were Steve Martin's autobiography "Born Standing Up" and Audrey Niffenegger's "Her Fearful Symmetry" (I like to read my fiction with a side of non). Both were pretty good!
6. What you do for a living (part-time job, full-time career etc.)?
I currently work as a Library Associate at the Teen Department in the Jax Main Library! Whoo-hoo!
7. What you hope to do in seven years. If you are not comfortable sharing personal information, that's fine too.
In 7 years I hope to be happily working in a library, preferably in an academic setting. I also hope to be a happy 'Sadie' and preferably living somewhere other than Florida. (By the way, a Sadie is a ‘married lady’, from a song in Funny Girl with Barbara Streisand. Ever since I got engaged that’s been the term du jour in my family and it is now stuck in my vernacular!)
8. What are you looking forward to doing the most in the Main Teen Department?
I'm looking forward to book clubs and making my mark while getting my foot in the door;)

For the last hour, they touted the brilliance of someone’s latest novel or nonfiction read. The damage is done – your interest is piqued. All you’re thinking now is, “I’ve got to read this book.”

Well, the first step is to head straight to your library’s catalog – either in-person or online – and see if you’ve beaten the rest of those viewers or listeners to the punch. Your library may have anticipated the wave of heightened interest and ordered extra copies, so you may be able to stake your claim then and there. But if not – if your library’s copies are already checked out – make sure you place a hold on that title. Your library will put you on a waiting list just for that title. As the items are returned, they are set aside for those next on the waiting list. Your library will notify you as soon as your book is ready. And if for some reason your library doesn’t own a copy of the book, don’t despair - your library’s Interlibrary Loan service may be able to borrow the book from another library system.

New Book? Why of course...

Okay so I don't know about you guys but this book cover definitely reminded me of a certain film that came out not too long ago...think super heroes, one in particular that happened to be very young and have QUITE the mouth on her! Maybe its the blue hair? I'm not sure. Either way its time to showcase another great NEW title available here in Teen!

Reading Level: 8th grade and UP, 208 pages

It appears that this author is a National Book Award Finalist for one of her other works, Where I Want to Be. Not to put TOO much sway on your brain, but this maaaay be a big deal in some cirles. The only way to know if she's worth the hype? READ THE BOOK! If you do, feel free to leave your own review as a comment, let us know if you agree with what these readers had to say:

"What I liked about this lighthearted novel is that the plot involves, almost entirely, technology and all that comes with it - FB, email accounts, etc. It is truly amazing to see that you can basically "create" a person from scratch, through this technology and, if you play it just right, you can actually really screw other people's lives in the process."

Are you enticed yet? I have to admit, I am a wee bit...how about another one?

"It's a subject that happens every day and it's nice to see how good Raye handled herself through it all. Lastly, the ending pulled it all together and left me feeling satisfied. Adele's approach to the plot and characters were well-written and I am excited to read more future works by her. I recommend this book if you're looking for a quick read that tells an apparent story that we've all experienced or seen[sic] in school."

`A moving and thought-provoking novel for young adults' --School Librarian

Let's see what some kids out there are saying about this French writer's new book:

"On the surface No and Me seems like a run of the mill Young Adult novel of a teenage girl dealing with both a family tragedy and growing up. Dig a little deeper though and this book is so much more than that, largely because of two factors. The first being the simple yet emotion filled writing style. The story is told not just from a first person point of view but it really did read as if an intelligent teen was retelling it - including those unique rambley off-topic moments, which all just added to the character and effect of the book. In some ways it reminded me of Catcher in the Rye."

and yet another review:

"No and Me is a touching story about friendship, and what it means to stand by someone when they have no-one else to turn to. It's well written and easy to get caught up in, making it a must-read novel for 2010."

Okay so you heard it, looks like this book is definitely worth checking out!

Who doesn't like winning cool stuff from summer reading? Well, this summer's "Make Waves at Your Library" Summer Reading program has come to a close. Thank you to all of you who signed-up and participated over the summer. You could sign-up online from our website www.jaxpubliclibrary.org or on paper. Also, if you didn't know, the participating JPL libraries held regular drawings for prizes including great books. Each library location also gave away a digital camera! Teen Summer Reading Reviews

The new school year is underway, and to remember what a great summer we had here in the Teen Department you'll start seeing some of the reviews written by teens across Duval for the 2010 Summer Reading Program. Congrats to Domingo for submitting reviews and winning this year's prize, a digital camera!

I love peace, love and baby ducks. I loved Lauren miracle's other books. Including the ttfn serious and eleven serious. In peace, love and baby ducks it talks about two teenage sisters who carly is older and a freethinker, and anna is younger and more mature looking which people at their private school like. In each part it talks about different things. In peace it talks about how carly comes back from camp and is into hippy things. In love carly meets cole who she LOVES!!! last in baby ducks carly and anna's parents leave for a day and they throw a big party. When they open the door there is a box of baby ducks. I love love love this book! If you have read any other lauren myracles books you should so read this:]

It Sure is a Tween Thing

Yay for Tween Thing! This afternoon 13 tweens gathered to check out our "Hey, look! It's a zine about Cross Stitch!" zine that I picked up this spring in Portland, Oregon at the Public Library Association (PLA) convention. While we were at it, we also gave it a go at learning the basics of cross stitching. (It's not as easy as you may think. Trust me on this.) Still, this zine is too cool. It offers illustrated step-by-step instruction and has great starter patterns. To learn more about the author, visit http://www.secretnerdbrigade.com/ and http://www.popfedgirl.com/.

Can you think of anything you would like to write a zine about? I have to say, I think it's terrific that some zine writers are happy to share their ideas with people in this often FREE format. It goes without saying that learning from an educational type zine is a blast and so is appreciating the creative process behind making a zine. By the way, don't forget that the Main Library has an uber nifty zine collection of their very own that you can browse and check out materials from. Also, the final summer Tween Thing "Hooked on Crochet" program is next Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the Children's Department. Don't miss it!

Teen Summer Fun!

Well, we just wrapped up our "Teen Summer Fun!" programs
with today's fab Henna Body Painting!
(The schedule included a Twilight Party, Volcano Rising, Summer Reading List Book Club, and Mosaic Magic programs which started in mid June.) This program is a popular one for sure and it's tons of fun too. To do the body painting, we used readymade cones from a local store and pre-selected designs. To begin, clean the skin surface. After the henna is applied, coat the drying paste with a mixture of lemon juice and sugar. Let the materials dry and flake off naturally. What you are left with is a tea-colored stain that will remain on the skin for a number of days or longer depending on how you care for it.

Pictured here are photos from Annie and Sara. (Thanks for texting in the photos so fast!) They brought in their own images and said they were pretty happy with the results. I think they came out very nice as well.

Summer Seed 2010 Experience

Hey my peoples. My name is Sherron and this year I was the Main Teen Department's Summer Seed. For 6 weeks I worked 4 hours a day 5 days a week. For those of you who don't know what that is, Summer Seeds are young adults between the ages of 16 and 21 that are selected by the City under the Mayor's Summer Job Program (MSJP). My experience when I was working in the library was hilarious and very interesting. One of the funny parts was when I was working on creating a Podcast for the main teen library. My supervisor (Ms. Mia) was trying to motivate me and calm me down. One of the techniques she used was role playing as my best friend Tiffany. Another funny moment at work was when I was learning for the first time how to reshelve returned materials back into the collection. Montae, the person I was shadowing, and I kept bumping heads a lot during that short period of time. The funniest part out of my whole experience was when I met this kid named Bruce! He loves to watch many of the same shows I do and he makes sure to fill me in on any of the episodes I've missed. Moving past the funnier moments, by far the most interesting assignment option was to clean the department refrigerator. That experience was very interesting to do. Sadly, today is my last day to work at the Main Teen Department. It's been fun, and now I'm looking forward to the upcoming school year.

This past weekend we held our 7th Teen & Adult Poetry Jam and our 1st Jax Youth Slam, Inc. events. It truly was "Off the Hook" with 200 in attendance at the Jam and around 150 at the competitive Slam, not to mention performances par none. Thank you everyone who participated! The Main Teen Drawing Contest - Winter 09 show is up and the winners have been announced! All in all, we received 117 entries this go-around from lots of talented artists. Entries were judged on 3 criteria including skill, originality, and "Wow" factor. The winner gets a solo show in February 2010! ...A big shout goes out to Community Connections, JPL's Southeast unit, and Bishop Kenny High School teens for participating.
